COMMODORE'S NEWSLETTER

1st MARCH 2023

Dear member,

Happy St David’s Day from Newport Boat Club. To mark the day some Welsh people may be sporting one or both of Wales national emblems, a daffodil, or a leek – but this is not compulsory should you be coming to the club today!

If you have visited your club recently, apart from during an event it may have appeared rather sleepy. Yes, footfall in the members bar is less during the winter months; however with the help of the many winter events, Newport Boat Club has managed to maintain a reasonable level of bar sales (this is important income that supports the maintenance and operation of the club for the members).

It has also been super to see so many members visiting not only the members bar, but enjoying the hospitality offered by the monthly events that have been run throughout the Autumn and Winter season: Club suppers with guest chefs, quizzes, talks and bingo. I would like to thank the staff and the volunteers from the Management Committee for the energy they have put in to running these occasions.

The last Club supper this winter is Tuesday 14th March, and now open for booking. For your comfort we set a maximum of 40 diners, and they sell out fast! There are two remaining screenings of Six Nations rugby matches with hot snacks at half time. We are also offering a Quiz night on 9th March and Bingo on the 30th March. Details of these events were sent out in the March Club events email 23rd February and can be found below.

The Management Committee have not been sleeping through these winter months, in fact this is the time much of the “invisible” that it takes to run the club is achieved. The incorporation of Newport Boat Club that members voted for at the AGM is nearing completion. Other projects for this year include a new website, which is in the final stages of build, and we will bring to you once content and site testing is complete. The refurbishment of the Commodore’s lounge is about to begin, lighting, flooring, sound dampening, updated technology and general aesthetics. Sailing and Boating have been busy maintaining and improving equipment ready for the season and adding to our small fleet of dinghies for members use during races. Facilities management soldiers stoically on dealing with building/maintenance issues as they occur, whilst IT pushes on with necessary software/hardware enhancements and new equipment – watch this space on webcams etc.

A reminder to those visiting the club, please bring your membership cards with you to ensure that you are able to enjoy your members discount on alcoholic drinks, and for any members who are only partially paid to complete this year’s subscription before visiting the club – we can only serve full paid members and their signed in guests. If you have any queries on membership or have mislaid your card, please e mail the Club Administration Manager at manager@newportboatclub.co.uk before you visit the club.

Thank you for both supporting and enjoying your club, Newport Boat Club, and we hope to see you here enjoying the view and the hospitality very soon.

With all best wishes

MARCH EVENTS:

Club Supper by Eilish Blade – Tuesday 14th March.  £21.50 per head.

Drinks from 6:00pm, supper from 7:15pm – limited to 40 persons. Please come and support our final Club Supper until next Autumn.

Eilish Blade welcomes you to Wyld Soul Kitchen, slow cooking using local and seasonal produce from primarily sustainable farming systems. This method of cooking offers advantages for preserving the nutritional content in food. The lower cooking temperatures means nutrients are retained that can be lost when food is cooked rapidly at high heat. The tradition of a long slow cook means that the collagen in meat is more effectively broken down and we get a ‘melt in the mouth’ experience.

Two courses, of a main course and dessert for £21.50

Miso ramen with handmade vegetarian dumplings and a slow cooked aromatic broth. Topped with Pembrokeshire seaweed, shredded carrot, pickled ginger, sprouted sunflower seeds and oyster mushrooms. Served with a side of kimchi.(v/vg)
